Muskegon County GOP Elects ?Tea Party, Ron Paul-Types? As Executive Officers, Goes More Conservative

By?Eric Gaertner

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI ? The Muskegon County Republican Party is now being led by a more conservative and Libertarian-type executive committee.

Andrew Fink, a Muskegon Community College adjunct instructor of government and a former attorney, is the only holdover on the executive committee, moving up to chairman of the county Republican Party. He and the other newly elected officers apparently have more of a Ron Paul slant to their political thinking.

?Nearly all of the members elected by the precinct delegates are new to the executive committee,? Fink said. ?They are anxious to promote the principles of individual freedom and efficient government. They will give the party new life.?

The officers, who were elected during the Republican Party?s December meeting, are: Fink, of Whitehall, chairman; Amy Preston of Norton Shores, vice chairwoman; Brad Shafer of Fruitland Township, secretary; and Eric Rothoff of Twin Lake, treasurer.

Worst team in NBA a tonic for Bulls

Marco Belinelli said he has repeated himself 100 times about how his love of basketball obviously means he would love to play as much as possible.

He got what he wanted Saturday night.

Despite returning to the bench as Richard Hamilton returned from injury to the starting lineup, Belinelli's playing time wasn't diminished much as he scored a game-high 17 points in 33 minutes in the Bulls' 87-77 victory over the Wizards before a crowd of 22,447 at the United Center.

"I think what's more important is confidence in myself," he said. "The first couple of weeks of the season I didn't have much. Now it's different."

The Bulls' belief in Belinelli is better than that. On a night when they shot only 39.1 percent as a team, his 7 of 16 marksmanship was essential.

"I thought Marco was terrific," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "He has been playing well for a long time. He hit big shots and made big plays."

The Bulls needed a lift after losing back-to-back games. But they still struggled against the Wizards, the NBA's worst team with a 4-24 overall record, 1-13 record on the road.

The Wizards, playing without injured leading scorer Jordan Crawford, shot only 36.5 percent but kept the Bulls within reach most of the game. They led by eight points in the first quarter and trailed only 79-76 with 5 minutes, 19 seconds remaining.

After that, Belinelli hit a 3-pointer and the Bulls locked in defensively, holding the Wizards without a field goal.

"Right now, we're not playing our best basketball, but we just found a way," Joakim Noah said. "It was a good win for us."

Hamilton played after missing 12 games with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot, finishing with nine points in almost 15 minutes.

"I thought he had a pretty good rhythm going," Thibodeau said. "That was a big plus."

Deng also returned from a right ankle injury that he sustained in the Christmas loss to the Rockets. He scored 11 points on 4 of 13 shooting.

The Bulls consider the victory a step forward after losing back-to-back games to the Rockets and Hawks. "The win was huge," Deng said.

Deng sat much of the fourth quarter, but Thibodeau said that was because he liked the lineup he at the time and not because of Deng's injury.

"It's good," Deng said of his ankle. "I'm glad I'm back on the court."

Belinelli's role going forward is undetermined, Thibodeau said. But it's clear he values Hamilton, a 14-year veteran, returning to the court.

"I am not sure yet," Thibodeau said of Belinelli's role. "We are going to go back and forth. 'Rip' was good today, taking everything into consideration. We need his minutes, we need his shots, and we need his points."

New law strengthens patents on product designs | Politics and Law ...

Patent law has long protected companies from having their products' appearance copied, as we saw during this year's copyright battle between Apple and Samsung over the shapes of their smartphones and tablets. But protections for design patents grew stronger this month, thanks to a new law signed by President Barack Obama.

The Patent Law Treaties Implantation Act of 2012, as it is known, amends federal patent law to implement two 5-year-old treaties: the Patent Law Treaty and the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs. The point of the treaties was to make the process of applying for a patent consistent across member countries.

In particular, that means allowing inventors to file patents around the world using a single application. The bill will go into effect about a year from now. And it increases the term of design patents by one year, from 14 to 15.

GigaOm, which has a thorough summary of the new law and its implications, notes that the law will make it easier for U.S. companies to fight knockoffs of their products. At the same time, it could generate even more litigation for a patent system already strained by it.

The GigaOm report notes that design patents have been easier to come by lately than more traditional utility patents, which cover methods instead of visual appearance. It predicts a new wave of design patent applications from foreign companies looking to protect their intellectual property in ways the courts will support.

Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight: When to watch for falling stars

A new and as-yet unnamed meteor shower may also make an appearance tonight, ramping up the celestial display even further.

Skywatchers around the world are in for a treat tonight, as the annual Geminid meteor shower is poised to put on a spectacular show.

The Geminids?will peak overnight tonight (Dec. 13) with the moon at its new phase. The skies will thus be free of the moon's glare, allowing viewers in rural areas to see perhaps 100 or more meteors per hour, experts say.

A new and as-yet unnamed?meteor shower?may also make an appearance tonight, ramping up the celestial display even further.

"Meteors?from the new shower (if any) will be visible in the early evening, with the Geminids making their appearance later on and lasting until dawn," Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, said in a statement.?[Photos: Geminid Meteor Shower of December 2011]

The Geminids ? so named because they appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini (The Twins) ? result when Earth plows through debris shed by the huge, enigmatic asteroid 3200 Phaethon. This is unusual for annual meteor showers, which are typically caused by comet particles.

The potential new shower's source is a comet called Wirtanen, Cooke said. Earth hasn't run into Wirtanen's debris stream before, but computer models suggest this year could be different.

If the new shower does indeed materialize, it could produce up to 30 meteors per hour tonight by itself, Cooke said. These shooting stars will seem to be coming from the constellation Picses (The Fish), so the shower may end up being called the Piscids.

A few scattered Geminids can be spotted shortly after sunset tonight. The show will really start picking up around 10 p.m. local time, experts say, and it should peak at 2 a.m. or so. You won't need binoculars or a telescope to see the shooting stars; just crane your neck up, preferably in a spot away from bright city lights.

You can also watch the meteor action online tonight if you so choose. Cooke and several NASA colleagues will host a live web chat overnight from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. EST (0400 to 0800 GMT), complete with live video of streaking meteors captured by a special camera at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. It will all happen here:?http://www.nasa.gov/connect/chat/geminids2012.html

Skywatchers who miss tonight's peak will have a few other chances to catch the Geminids this year. The shower should linger until Dec. 16 or so before petering out completely.

Editor's Note:?If you take a photo of this year's Geminids that you'd like to share with SPACE.com for a possible story or gallery, please send it, along with your comments, to spacephotos@space.com.

Contract Negotiation: Case Study in Contingent Thinking ...

Whether in sales or strategic partnerships, a deal closes once a contract has been agreed upon. As expected, both sides are going to haggle over the nuances surrounding some of the greater business terms. At this point in time, negotiators are brought in to hammer out the final terms. Many would argue that agreeing on the final decisions is an art itself?this is indeed the opinion of many a ?closer,? those always-in-high-demand negotiators who are able to harangue the best terms all while tying off the sales cycle quickly. Just as it is very difficult to quantify the distinction between mediocre and great salespeople, it is very difficult to pinpoint a great closer. Most people will say the distinction is intuitive?you just know when you see one.

From experience, I can say that the secret to negotiations is simple (but difficult to practice). The secret sauce of successful contract negotiation lies in understanding your opposing negotiator?s opposing point of view. In other words, the person who most completely understands their equivalent?s point of view?or to paraphrase Jerry Weissman, their WIIFY (what?s in it for you) ? will best be able to broker acceptable compromise. Understanding one?s opponents? WIIFY is difficult to do, but not impossible. What ?closers? call intuitive is simply an organized plan of attack in haggling over terms.? In fact, a systematic framework for contract negotiation can be established by understanding the opposite negotiator?s key business goals; once one has understood the other side?s best alternative to a negotiated agreement, one can be in a better position to ink favorable business terms that seems acceptable to the other side.

The framework one applies in optimizing the best terms resulting from contract negotiation can be exemplified in a light case study of behavioral game theory, especially one that draws from the realm of contingent thinking. According to the main tenets of behavioral economics, people?s actions under certain time constrains can be categorized. Behavioral game theory details what people do when playing games (i.e. puzzles, prisoner?s dilemma scenarios, etc.). Normative analysis postulates what people should do (i.e. what people should do to maximize positive externalities). In contrast, positive analysis predicts what people actually do. So in scenarios where two parties are faced with two alternative decisions (in the trite prisoner?s dilemma scenario, ?rat on partner? or ?stay silent?), the best decision to take can usually be summed up by the Nash Equilibrium. In this situation, the negotiator, having fully understood his choices and those of his opposing party, has no incentive to deviate from the decision he ultimately chooses. ?Nash Equilibriums are possible in certain situations, but they are rare, especially if the game is not zero-sum.? For instance, it may be difficult to pinpoint Nash Equilibrium if one plays the game over multiple rounds; in this new case, one?s choice can instead turn into a strategy.? As a matter of fact, a dominant strategy is dominant if it is the best response to any feasible strategy that others might play. In mathematical terms, displaying the utility function of dominant strategy is as follows:

If si = dominant strategy, then Ui(si*, s-i) > ui(si?, s-i) for all s-i, si??si*

In a game where you can do multiple iterations, your choice of action providing the best result can be difficult to pinpoint unless one keeps in mind what one?s opponent decides. This is contingent thinking in its full form: one has to make a decision based on what one thinks one?s opponent will do. This is exactly what contract negotiation is: one has to hedge one?s bets by understanding what is valuable to the person one is in negotiation with, consequently choosing what to give in to and what to fight over.

The p-beauty game repeatedly tried in behavioral economic case studies best exemplifies the applications of contingent thinking to contract negotiation. ?In the p-beauty game (Moulin 1986), all participants are asked to simultaneously pick a number between 0 and 100. The winner of the contest is the person(s) whose number is closest to 2/3 (an arbitrary p value usually picked by the mediator that falls between 0 and 1*) times the average of all numbers submitted. How do you win this game? By choosing a number contingent of what one thinks other people will choose. In this case, one knows that the highest possible mean is 100, so choosing below (2/3)* 100 is a dominated strategy (best strategy one can take considering what you think other people will do). One can do better by choosing as low as (2/3)* (2/3)* 100?in this case one assumes that everybody else had the same reasoning as you and picked (2/3)*100 as the average, so one has to pick (2/3) * (2/3) * 100 to win the game. The same logic applies when one considers if other people think of the aforementioned strategy a step further (as you just did), so one decides to take one?s iterated decision a step further and choose between (2/3)*(2/3)*(2/3)*100 and (2/3)*(2/3)*100. Extending this process N steps results in the following conclusion: the highest possible valuation of the mean is 100*(2/3)^N, so one can do better by choosing at least as low as 100*(2/3)^(N+1). If everyone practices this sort of contingent thinking, then the best possible number to choose is 0. However, we know in the real world, not everybody will be practicing this sort of contingent thinking (I sure didn?t when I played this game for the first time). So one has to take that in consideration, and hedge one?s bets by choosing a number a little more than 0 rather than exactly 0. That gives one the highest realistic probability that one?s chosen number will win.

In the p-beauty game, one has to make a realistic decision by contingently thinking of what one?s opponent(s) may decide to do. ?This happens every day when one negotiates contracts. As Roger Fisher and William Ury explain in their book Getting to Yes, arriving at the best business terms comes from negotiating on merits rather than on positions. They argued that negotiators need to focus on the issues and not the people, generate a variety of creative possibilities that can be mutually agreed to, and insist that final decisions be made on a rational basis rather than arbitrary or emotional ones. Ultimately, when one understands your opposing team?s best alternative to a negotiated agreement?BATNA as Fisher and Ury write?then one can avoid negotiating from a bottom line, allowing for flexibility in negotiated terms that are favorable to both sides. Just as in the p-beauty game where one has to make decisions based on what other people will decide, the contract negotiator has to ask for terms that they think can be agreed to by both sides.

Ultimately a contract is a formal approval for a relationship to progress between two opposing sides. The one lesson that I?ve taken away from my own experiences is the following: sometimes it?s worth losing some battles for the sake of preserving the relationship with your business partner. Especially if you are inking the beginning of a partnership, whether distribution or channel, the potential upsell will be more expedient if the relationship begins on good terms. One must acknowledge what one?s BATNA is and understand what your partner?s BATNA is as well for the contract negotiation to be succinct and fruitful.

Sadly, sometimes each side?s BATNAs are more attractive than any compromise, and one side walks. Sometimes preserving the relationships means discounting the potential utility from future endeavors hope that the future discounted utility is greater than the present BATNA. The relationship is probably the highest utility factor when contracts are being negotiation, and not having that relationship in place is an unacceptable BATNA?this is a card that needs to be played close to the chest when dealing in hostile conversations.

Ultimately, the truly skillful negotiator will prepare for his s?ances with the other side by meticulously researching what the partner?s BATNA is, and strategize his thinking so that the resulting compromises is better than his own BATNA. Indeed, planning one step ahead?or multiple steps, as exemplified by the p-beauty game?separates the best ?closers? from the mediocre.

[*if p=1 then there are many possible Nash equilibria, as there are multiple dominant strategies. ]

What happens to you if we go over the fiscal cliff

22 hrs.

Some lawmakers are back in Washington hoping to hammer out a last-minute deal to avert the so-called fiscal cliff, but so far it seems that there?s more name-calling than deal-making going on.

If no deal is ever reached, it will be more than just a political headache. Americans also could feel considerable pocketbook pain as taxes rise, unemployment benefits are cut off and an array of smaller changes take effect.

The cumulative effect on Americans? wallets could be enough to dent?significantly the already weak economy. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has said the combination of tax increases and spending cuts could be enough to send the nation back into recession.

That?s the worst-case scenario, and despite the considerable gridlock, most experts expect that Congress and the president will eventually come to some sort of deal. Experts also say that even if no deal is reached by Jan. 1, retroactive fixes and other dealmaking could prevent the most harmful effects from ever hitting most Americans.

Related: Consumers, businesses brace for fiscal cliff impact

Still, the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan think tank, says that nearly 90 percent of households?would be affected if we go over the fiscal cliff completely and no deal is reached.

A stalemate would have very specific effects on certain groups of taxpayers, such as students, parents and married couples who have benefited over the past decade?from certain tax law changes passed under the Bush and Obama administrations.

But the Tax Policy Center says that on average, taxes would go up for every income group, from the poorest taxpayers to the most wealthy:

  • Americans in the lowest 20 percent of the income scale could pay an average of about $400 more in taxes.
  • Middle-income households could pay about $2,000 more in taxes, on average.
  • The top 20 percent of taxpayers could pay about $14,000 more a year in taxes, on average.
  • The 1 percenters could pay an average of $120,000 more in taxes.

Here?s a look at some of the biggest issues likely to affect the largest groups of taxpayers if Congress cannot make a deal.

Tax rates will go up: If no deal is made, taxpayers can expect their tax rate to rise no matter what income group they fall in, said?Roberton Williams, senior fellow with the Tax Policy Institute. That?s because previously passed rate cuts would expire.

?Everyone who has taxable income will see a tax increase because of the rates,? Williams said.

Payroll taxes: For the past two years, the employee?s share of taxes paid for Social Security has been set at 4.2 percent instead of the previous level of 6.2 percent. That temporary tax cut would expire without a new deal, meaning almost everyone?s taxes would rise by 2 percentage points.

Translation: Your paycheck would be a little bit smaller.

?That?s the thing that people will see first,? Williams said.

Alternative Minimum Tax:? The Alternative Minimum Tax? was originally designed so that wealthy taxpayers would be forced to pay a minimum level of taxes no matter what. But because it was not created to account for inflation, over the years it has threatened to affect an ever-bigger group of people.

Congress has previously passed temporary ?patches? to keep lower-income households from having to pay more taxes. If no deal is reached this year, the latest patch would expire and the Internal Revenue Service says around 30 million additional taxpayers would become subject to the AMT.

Of course, every taxpayer?s individual circumstances are different. To see how your family?s tax rates could be affected, you can check out the Tax Policy Center?s individualized tax?calculator.

Taxes aren?t the only pocketbook problem Americans could face if a deal isn?t reached, because so much government spending is tied up in reaching a deal. But the most widespread effect would probably be on people who have been unemployed for a long time.

Unemployment benefits: About 2.1 million unemployed Americans are scheduled to lose federally funded unemployment compensation if Congress can?t reach a deal to extend the benefits plan by the end of the year. President Obama has said he?d like to see those benefits extended as part of a fiscal cliff deal.

The federally funded unemployment benefit extensions were introduced in 2008 while the country was in the depths of the recession. The extended benefits kick in after an unemployed person has exhausted his or her 26 weeks of state benefits. The exact amount of additional compensation depends on the unemployment rate in the person?s home state.

The unemployment rate has fallen sharply in recent months, but long-term unemployment remains a major?problem. About 4.8 million people, or 40 percent of the total number of people who were unemployed in November, had been jobless for 27 weeks or more.

Internet Marketing Tips: Lesson #4 - Link Popularity Software

How are you? We're winding down to the end of this short course. But we still need to go over a few things that will help you run a successful link building campaign.

In today's lesson we are going to talk a little bit about link popularity software that you can use to check your search engine rank, manage and monitor your backlinks.

As you have learned from your lessons, link popularity refers to the number of backlinks you have to your website. You have also learned that this number is important is because the higher your link popularity, the better you look to search engines, the higher up you will appear in search engine results, and the more traffic and sales you will get out of your website.

In you last lesson we talked about doing a quick backlink check in Yahoo. Using link building software is another way that you can check your search engine rank, plus manage and monitor your backlinks as well.

Using the right software can help you find new backlinks and track existing ones. Believe it or not, you could actually be linked to other websites without even realizing it. But it's important that your know where your links are originating from.

Always keep in mind that you want them to come from quality sources, not link farms or other non-reputable sites. The right software can actually allow you to do the necessary research about which sites to use in order to become more highly ranked by the search engines.

Can you do all of this work without software?

Yes, but it takes a great deal of time and, if you are new to the whole "link building" concept, then you also need to learn quite a bit about how to go about it the most effective way. Software can save you an enormous amount of time and effort. As you let a system do your work for you, you can still continue to learn about link building and have time to do other business-building activities as well.

But as far as business building goes, the concept of link popularity is extremely important if you want to have any kind of presence online. And, in order to succeed in today's economy, you need to be present online.

Link popularity software can offer you a wide range of strategies for generating traffic as well as for building links. It can help you monitor the ranking of your website in the various search engines, find high page ranks easily and even find the right affiliates to sell your products. It can also monitor reciprocal links on affiliate sites and show which pages are indexed in search engines.

You can choose to go with the free software and then upgrade to other link-building services that the software providers usually offer. However, it's important to make sure you do your research and take a look at several services before picking one to handle your website's link popularity improvement.

That's it for today's lesson. In your next and final lesson we will talk about buying links and whether or not it will help your search engine ranking.

To Your Success,
Arthur M.

What we learned about humanity in 2012

The controversial extinct human lineage known as "hobbits" gained a face this year, one of many projects that shed light in 2012 on the history of modern humans and their relatives. Other discoveries include the earliest known controlled use of fire and the possibility that Neanderthals or other extinct human lineages once sailed to the Mediterranean.

Here's a look at what we learned about ourselves through our ancestors this year.

We're not alone

A trove of discoveries this year revealed a host of other extinct relatives of modern humans. For instance, researchers unearthed 3.4-million-year-old fossils of a hitherto unknown species that lived about the same time and place as Australopithecus afarensis, a leading candidate for the ancestor of the human lineage. In addition, fossils between 1.78 million and 1.95 million years old discovered in 2007 and 2009 in northern Kenya suggest that at least two extinct human species lived alongside Homo erectus, a direct ancestor of our species. Moreover, fossils only between 11,500 and 14,500 years old hint that a previously unknown type of human called the "Red Deer Cave People" once lived in China.

Bones were not all that scientists revealed about modern humans' extinct relatives in 2012. For instance, scientists finally put a face on the hobbit, a nickname for a controversial human lineage. Anthropologist Susan Hayes at the University of Wollongong in Australia reconstructed the appearance of the 3-foot (1-meter) tall, 30-year-old female member of the extinct humans officially known as Homo floresiensis, which were first discovered on the remote Indonesian island of Flores in 2003. [Image Gallery: A Real Life 'Hobbit']

DNA extracted from a recently discovered extinct human lineage known as the Denisovans ? close relatives of Neanderthals ? also revealed new details about this group, which once interbred with modern humans. The Denisovan genome that was sequenced belonged to a little girl with dark skin, brown hair and brown eyes, and displayed about 100,000 recent changes in our genome that occurred after the split from the Denisovans. A number of these changes influenced genes linked with brain function and nervous system development, leading to speculation that we may think differently from the Denisovans.

Genetic analysis also suggested the only modern humans whose ancestors did not interbreed with Neanderthals were apparently sub-Saharan Africans. These findings are just one tidbit regarding the closest extinct relatives of modern humans that was revealed this year. Scientists also found that the unusually powerful right arms of Neanderthals might not have been due to a spear-hunting life as was previously suggested, but rather one often spent scraping animal skins for clothes and shelters. Archaeologists also suggested that Neanderthals and other extinct human lineages might have been ancient mariners, venturing to the Mediterranean Islands millennia before researchers think modern humans arrived at the isles.

Humans' tool use

Ancient artifacts revealed this year also have shown how tool use has helped humanity reshape the world ? and perhaps inadvertently reshape humanity as well.

For instance, ash and charred bone, the earliest known evidence of controlled use of fire, reveal that human ancestors may have used fire 1 million years ago, 300,000 years earlier than thought, suggesting that human ancestors as early as Homo erectus may have begun using fire as part of their way of life. Controlled fires and cooked meat may have influenced human brain evolution, allowing our ancestors to evolve to have larger, more calorie-hungry brains and bodies.

Discoveries involving ancient weapons also revealed that humans learned to make and use these tools far earlier than scientists thought. For instance, what may be ancient stone arrowheads or lethal tools for hurling spearssuggest humans innovated relatively advanced weapons about 70,000 years ago, while a University of Toronto-led team of anthropologists found evidence that humans in South Africa used stone-tipped weapons for hunting 500,000 years ago, which is 200,000 years earlier than previously suggested.

Even the seemingly innocuous discovery this year of the first direct signs of cheesemaking from 7,500-year-old potsherds from Poland might help reveal how animal milk dramatically shaped the genetics of Europe. Most of the world, including the ancestors of modern Europeans, is lactose intolerant, unable to digest the milk sugar lactose as adults. However, while cheese is a dairy product, it is relatively low in lactose. Transforming milk into a product such as cheese that is friendlier to lactose-intolerant people might have helped promote the development of dairying among the first farmers of Europe. The presence of dairying over many generations may then, in turn, have set the stage for the evolution of lactase tolerance in Europe. As such, while cheese might just seem to be a topping on pizza or a companion to wine, it might have changed Western digestive capabilities.

Other clues regarding the diet of ancient relatives also emerged. For example, 2-million-year-old fossils suggest humans' immediate ancestor may have lived off a woodland diet of leaves, fruits and bark, instead of a menu based on the open savanna, as other extinct relatives of humanity did. In addition, fragments of a 1.5-million-year-old skull from a child recently found in Tanzania suggest that later members of the human lineage weren't just occasional carnivores but regular meat eaters, findings that help build the case that meat-eating helped the human lineage evolve large brains.

Humans still evolving

When it comes to the future of humanity, research this year added to accumulating evidence that natural forces of evolution continue to shape humanity. Church records of nearly 6,000 Finns born between 1760 and 1849 showed that despite humans radically altering their environments with behavior such as farming, human patterns of survival and reproduction were comparable with those of other species.

One researcher at Stanford University has even suggested that humans are getting dumber over time, having lost the evolutionary pressure to be smart once we started living in densely populated settlements several millennia ago. However, other scientists dispute this notion, pointing at geniuses such as Stephen Hawking, and suggest that rather than losing our intelligence, people have diversified, resulting in a number of different types of smarts today.

The 5 best fiction books of the year

Looking for a great book to get you through the holidays? Read on

1. Bring Up the Bodies
by Hilary Mantel?(Holt, $28)
In Hilary Mantel's hands, Thomas Cromwell has become "one of literature's most compelling characters," said?Radhika?Jones?in?Time. Henry VIII's chief adviser was both "loyal and scheming, generous and cruel" ? traits Mantel brought to the fore in 2009's?Wolf Hall,?the first installment of her Cromwell trilogy. In the second, she "deepens her portrait of the master puppeteer." Mantel's "exhilarating prose, unrivaled in contemporary fiction," puts us whisper-close to Cromwell as he maneuvers Anne Boleyn toward the executioner's block while inescapably sowing the seeds of his own eventual demise. Mantel obviously understands that "what gives fiction its vitality is not the accurate detail but the animate one," said?James Wood?in?The New Yorker. "Quite a few readers would be prepared to yawn" at an encounter between Cromwell and theologian Thomas?Cranmer, but Mantel makes such scenes "alive, silvery," and "rapid with insight."
A caveat:?This book feels too much like a bridge to the next installment, a "highly entertaining throat-clearing," said?William?Georgiades?at?Slate.

2.?Billy Lynn's Long Halftime?Walk
by Ben Fountain?(Ecco, $15)
The Iraq War era has found its?Catch-22, said?Jeff?Turrentine?in?The Washington Post.?Ben Fountain's "masterful gut-punch of a debut novel" unfolds on a recent Thanksgiving Day as the surviving members of a combat unit, fresh from battlefield heroics celebrated endlessly by Fox News, are feted during the megawatt halftime show of the holiday's Dallas Cowboys game. With "hardly a false note," Fountain records the spectacle through the 19-year-old eyes of Billy Lynn, who's just hours away from redeployment and trying to hold his emotions in check as he soldiers his way into the belly of the beast of American excess. Fountain's novel "left me breathless," said?Jonathan?Evison?at?NPR. This brilliant satire is also remarkably visceral. "From the sodium glare of the stadium lights to the acid sting of bitterness in the throat," you "feel the story with your whole body."?
A caveat:?Billy Lynn?is "95 percent the most entertaining novel I've read in ages," said?Adam Langer?in the?San Francisco Chronicle. But the ending feels forced.?

3.?NW?
by Zadie Smith?(Penguin, $27)
When in doubt, return to your roots, said?K. Thomas Kahn?at?TheMillions.com. Zadie Smith's fourth novel circles back to Willesden, the northwest London neighborhood of her youth and the setting of her stunning 2000 debut,?White Teeth. But?NW?is a "more poetic and abstract novel," with stream-of-consciousness sections that owe a debt to Virginia Woolf's?Mrs.?Dalloway. Leah and Natalie, the dual protagonists, grew up together in a neighborhood housing project, and both have made it out. But each friend is struggling, amid the claims that race, class, and gender make on her, to find and embrace a comfortable identity. This is a "deeply ambitious" novel, said?David L. Ulin?in the?Los Angeles Times.?But it's also "exuberant, lush with language," and "intensely readable, intensely human": It signals the maturation of a writer already wise beyond her years.?
A caveat:?"The people in this book are more stereotypes than individuals, more ham-handed cartoons than emotionally detailed human beings," said?Michiko Kakutani?in?The New York Times.?

4.?Gone Girl
by Gillian Flynn?(Crown, $25)
"A great crime novel is an unstable thing, entertainment and literature suspended in some undetermined solution," said?Laura Miller?at?Salon. Gillian Flynn's "ingenious, pitch-black" third novel mixes the ingredients to perfection. Nick and Amy lead charmed lives in New York City until a turn of the economy demotes them to a McMansion in the Missouri town where Nick grew up. Then Amy disappears, leaving a trace of blood, and all signs point to Nick. From then on, readers ache to solve "two mysteries ? what happened to Amy, and what happened to Nick-and-Amy?" Neither puzzle is easily solved, said?Janet Maslin?in?The New York Times. "Both Nick and Amy are extremely adept liars, and they lied to each other a lot." They lie to you, too ? Nick in the present tense and Amy in diary entries. All along, Flynn displays "ice-pick sharp" control, with "characters so well-imagined they're hard to part with ? even if, as in Amy's case, they are already departed."?
A caveat:?Flynn's characters are "slightly cartoonish, and more than once, their over-the-top scheming strains credulity," said?Amy Gutman?in the?Chicago Tribune.?

5.?Building Stories
by Chris Ware?(Pantheon, $50)
This remarkable work of fiction is less a book than a "keepsake box full of things you don't want to forget," said?Melissa Maerz?in?Entertainment Weekly. Each board-game-size box contains 14 odd-shaped bits of "beautifully illustrated" literature, from a flip book to a poster to an ersatz children's reader. The whole package is the work of graphic novelist Chris Ware, and there's no right way in. Picking things up at random, you find your way into an affecting story about the lonely lives of four inhabitants of one Chicago brownstone. My initial irritation at having to piece Ware's story together "gave way to enchantment," said?Steve Almond?in?The New Republic. A "poet of solitude," Ware has used the comic-book format as a tool of psychological investigation ? conveying the scope of his characters' "private torments" and "unfulfilled lives" in a few well-wrought panels.?Building Stories?might be too bleak for some readers, but it's "brutal in the way all great art is." In fact, it's "one of the most important pieces of art I have ever experienced."
A caveat:?You can't read?Building Stories?on a Kindle, said?Douglas Wolk?in?The New York Times.?

How the books were?chosen
Our rankings were created by weighting the end-of-year recommendations published in?The Atlantic, CSMonitor.com,?Minneapolis?Star Tribune, Newsday, The New York Times, NPR.org, O?magazine, Publishers Weekly, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Slate, Time,?and? The Washington Post.

Seattle's Richard Sherman wins suspension appeal

RENTON, Wash. (AP) ? Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman won his appeal of a four-game suspension for use of performance enhancing substances on Thursday, making him eligible for the NFL playoffs.

Sherman posted "I won," on his Twitter account Thursday morning, followed by teammates tweeting their congratulations. Sherman added, "Thank you (at)nfl for upholding the truth! To the 12s Thank you your faith is rewarded! Thank you lord."

The decision was made by former NFL executive Bob Wallace.

Sherman was steadfast since news broke of his pending suspension that he believed he would win on appeal. Sherman's appeal was based on errors in the chain of custody of his sample and that there were mistakes made by the tester.

Sherman made his appeal late last week.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email the league is reviewing the decision, but was declining comment due to confidentiality provisions.

The decision makes Sherman eligible for the Seahawks season finale against St. Louis and, more importantly, the playoffs. Seattle has played the last three weeks without fellow starting cornerback Brandon Browner who is serving a four-game suspension for a banned substance violation.

Browner's suspension expires after Sunday's game against the Rams, so Seattle will have both of its starting cornerbacks available for the postseason.

"Congrats to Richard Sherman for winning his appeal! Happy for him & it'll be great to have him with us as we move forward," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll tweeted Thursday morning.

According to STATS, Sherman is tied with Pittsburgh's Keenan Lewis for the NFL lead with 23 passes defensed. He is tied for second in interceptions with seven.

Sherman was a surprise omission from the Pro Bowl roster announced Wednesday. Despite his impressive numbers, Sherman was a first alternate at cornerback for the NFC, behind the Chicago duo of Tim Jennings and Charles Tillman, and Arizona's Patrick Peterson.

Even before the Pro Bowl rosters were announced, Sherman didn't seem to care about getting a trip to Hawaii.

"It don't mean nothing," Sherman said Wednesday. "I bet you I'll be on the first-team All-Pro. That means more to me."

Adam Warner: Offbeat Honeymoon: 6 Unique Alternatives for Your Trip

When it comes to ultimate honeymoon agendas, luxury trips to tropical destinations like Hawaii and St. Lucia typically lead the pack. But for those couples looking for alternatives to the ordinary resort getaway, consider these six unique ideas still bound to provide the getaway of a lifetime.

Mini-Moon

Mini-moons are quickly becoming a popular honeymoon alternative for newlyweds. Ideal for honeymooners with budget limitations, timing constraints, or little vacation time set aside, a mini-moon still enables couples to experience an unforgettable destination for a few days, even if it's not Paris or Hawaii. Typically, a mini-moon consists of a destination within driving distance or a short flight.

Mini-moon hotspots: New York City, Las Vegas, Miami, and San Francisco.

Volunteer Honeymoon

Whether clearing trails in a scenic national park or building homes in a developing nation, a volunteer honeymoon allows newlyweds to travel the world while giving back to individuals, communities, and organizations in need. This is truly a memorable travel experience, one that will certainly make an impact on you, but also the people and projects that you decide to help out. What a remarkable way to start your new life together.

Volunteer Ideas: Build a home through Habitat for Humanity, preserve hiking trails with the Sierra Club, or help endangered animals with Biosphere Expeditions.

Eco-Honeymoon

Looking to explore and learn about some of the world's most diverse ecosystems? If the answer is a definite yes, then consider an eco-honeymoon for your upcoming trip.

Ecotourism is an increasingly popular form of travel that focuses on visiting natural or protected areas of a destination while minimizing overall impact. In fact, it has quickly become one of the fastest growing areas in the travel industry. From wildlife viewing in the heart of the African savannah to whitewater rafting down glacier-fed rivers, the options are practically endless for eco-adventurers.

Eco-Ideas: Drop your bags at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens in beautiful Costa Rica. Located in the lush northeastern section of the country, this remote property offers luxury accommodations and a variety of unforgettable eco-activities, including boat tours through stunning Tortuguero National Park and private turtle nesting expeditions.

Camping or National Parks Getaway

Outdoorsy couples may want to consider a national park honeymoon to experience America's greatest natural wonders. Whether you explore just one destination or decide to mix and match, your honeymoon is guaranteed to feature scenic drives, soaring mountain vistas, gorgeous backcountry hikes, and other incredible once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Meanwhile, with properties such as Ahwahnee Hotel to choose from, couples don't have to sacrifice comfort to get up close and personal with some of the country's most extraordinary parks.

Honeymoon-worthy picks: Olympic (WA), Acadia (ME), Yosemite (CA), and Yellowstone (WY) national parks.

European River Cruise

A cruise along one of Europe's famous rivers can provide newlyweds with an intimate, relaxing, and overall exceptional experience. Demand for European river cruises is now at an all-time high -- especially among American travelers -- and it's easy to see why. Travelers can sail past picturesque countryside, discover historic cities, view gorgeous hilltop castles, and easily embark on new experiences and activities along the way.

Popular European routes include the Danube, Rhine, Po, Seine, Rhone, and Moselle rivers. Memorable city stops feature Vienna, Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Paris, and Amsterdam, among countless others.

Ride the Rails

Leave behind the hassles of airplanes and car rentals on your upcoming honeymoon. With the ability to experience luxurious accommodations, top-notch cuisine, and breathtaking scenery, plus the chance to hop on and off at some of the world's most iconic destinations, train travel can be immensely rewarding, romantic, and eye-opening. Arguably, it can transport you to places -- and even eras -- better than any other mode of transportation.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express remains one of the world's most luxurious and spectacular train experiences. Meanwhile, the Napa Valley Wine Train is also a great option, especially for mini-mooners.

(AP) ? Syria's wounded interior minister rushed home from a Beirut hospital on Wednesday for fear he would be arrested after some Lebanese called to put him on trial for his role in a 1986 crackdown by Syrian troops in Lebanon.

In another blow to President Bashar Assad, his commander of military police defected.

The defector, Maj. Gen. Abdul-Aziz Jassem al-Shallal, is one of the most senior members of Assad's inner circle to join the opposition during the 21-month-old uprising against authoritarian rule. He appeared in a video aired on Al-Arabiya TV late Tuesday saying the army has been turned into a gang to kill and destroy.

Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar, wounded in a bombing of his ministry in Damascus, left a Beirut hospital before his treatment was finished and flew home to Damascus on a private jet, officials at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport said.

Al-Shaar was wounded on Dec. 12 when a suicide bomber exploded his vehicle outside the Interior Ministry, killing five and wounding many. He was brought to the hospital in neighboring Lebanon a week ago.

A top Lebanese security official told The Associated Press that al-Shaar was rushed out of Lebanon after authorities there received information that international arrest warrants could be issued against him because of his role in the crackdown against protesters in Syria.

Over the past week, some Lebanese officials and individuals have called for al-Shaar's arrest for his role in a 1986 crackdown in the northern city of Tripoli.

In the 1980s, al-Shaar was a top intelligence official in northern Lebanon when Syrian troops stormed Tripoli and crushed the Islamic Unification Movement ? a Sunni Muslim group that then supported former Palestine Liberation Organization chief Yasser Arafat. Hundreds of people were killed in the battles and since then, many in northern Lebanon have referred to al-Shaar as "the butcher of Tripoli."

The Lebanese security official said Lebanese citizens had also begun taking steps to sue al-Shaar for his role during Syria's military domination of Lebanon for decades. Lebanese are deeply divided over the Syria crisis.

Al-Shaar and other Syrian officials are also on a list of people subjected to European Union sanctions for violence against anti-regime protesters in Syria.

"Lebanese officials contacted Syrian authorities and that sped up his departure," said the security official, adding that a Lebanese medical team is expected to go to Damascus to continue al-Shaar's treatment there. "If such arrest warrants are issued, Lebanese judicial authorities will have to arrest him and this could be an embarrassment for the country," he said.

The airport and security officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The Syrian government denied at first that al-Shaar was wounded. Then it emerged that he was brought to the Beirut hospital last week for treatment. It was the second time the minister was wounded in the civil war. He was also injured when a bomb went off on July 18 during a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus, killing four top security officials.

Lebanon and Syria have a long and bitter history.

Syrian forces moved into Lebanon in 1976 as peacekeepers after the country was swept into a civil war between Christian and Muslim militias. For nearly 30 years that followed, Lebanon lived under Syrian military and political domination.

That grip began to slip in 2005, when former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated in Beirut. Syria was widely accused of involvement ? something it has always denied ? and Damascus was forced to withdraw its troops. Even so, Damascus has since maintained considerable power and influence in Lebanon.

Shortly after he arrived in Beirut for treatment last week, anti-Syrian politicians, including legislators Jamal Jarrah and Mohammed Kabbara, called for al-Shaar's arrest. Another call came this week, when Lebanese lawyer Tarek Shandab filed a complaint to the country's prosecution accusing al-Shaar of "genocide and ethnic cleansing" in Tripoli.

In another setback for the regime, the defection of the military police chief came as military pressure builds on the regime, with government bases falling to rebel assault near the capital Damascus and elsewhere across the country.

The defector al-Shallal appeared in a video aired on Al-Arabiya TV late Tuesday saying he is joining "the people's revolution."

Dozens of generals have defected since Syria's crisis began in March 2011. In July, Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass was the first member of Assad's inner circle to break ranks and join the opposition.

Al-Shallal is one of the most senior and held a top post at the time that he left. He said in the video that the "army has derailed from its basic mission of protecting the people and it has become a gang for killing and destruction." He accused the military of "destroying cities and villages and committing massacres against our innocent people who came out to demand freedom."

Thousands of Syrian soldiers have defected over the past 21 months and many of them are now fighting against government forces. Many have cited attacks on civilians as the reason they switched sides. Anti-regime activists estimate more than 40,000 have died in the past 21 months.

In violence on Wednesday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said government shelling in the northeastern province of Raqqa killed at least 20 people, including eight children, three women and nine others. An agricultural area near the village of Qahtaniyeh was hit by the shelling.

An amateur video showed the bodies of a dozen people including children lying in a row inside a room. Some of them had blood on their clothes, while weeping could be heard in the background.

The videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting on the events depicted.

Also Wednesday, activists said rebels were attacking the Wadi Deif military base in the northern province of Idlib. The base, which is near the strategic town of Maaret al-Numan, has been under siege for weeks.

In October, rebels captured Maaret al-Numan, a town on the highway that links the capital Damascus with Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a major battleground in the civil war since July.

The attack on Wadi Deif comes a day after rebels captured the town of Harem near the Turkish border. The rebels have captured wide areas and military posts in northern Syria over the past weeks.

In Lebanon, airport officials in Beirut said Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad and Assistant Foreign Minister Ahmad Arnous flew early Wednesday to Moscow.

Their visit to Moscow comes two days after Assad met in Damascus with Lakhdar Brahimi, the international envoy to Syria. Brahimi, who is scheduled to go to Moscow as well, gave no indication of progress toward a negotiated solution for the civil war.

Brahimi is still in Syria and met Tuesday with representatives of the opposition National Coordination Body, state-run news agency SANA said. The head of the group, Hassan Abdul-Azim, said Brahimi briefed them on his efforts to reach an "international consensus, especially between Russia and the United Stated to reach a solution."

NCB spokesman Rajaa al-Naser said his group said there must be an end to violence and formation of a "transitional government with full prerogatives."

Storm brings white Christmas, tornado threat to central U.S.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A major winter storm brought a rare white Christmas to the southern U.S. plains on Tuesday, contributing to a 21-vehicle pile-up that shut down a major highway in Oklahoma, thousands of power outages and the death of a Texas man.

The storm system surging east from Kansas and the Texas Panhandle included tornados and severe thunderstorms along its southern fringe, from southeastern Texas to Alabama, the National Weather Service said.

The service reported a tornado warning for the Mobile, Alabama area late Tuesday afternoon.

CenterPoint Energy reported more than 20,000 customers without power in the Houston area Tuesday afternoon.

The storm is expected to expected to evolve into a blizzard from Arkansas to southern Illinois Tuesday night, with snowfall of up to a foot in some areas, according to Accuweather.com.

Accuweather.com senior meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski warned on the website that travel will be "extremely treacherous, if not impossible, as the snow clogs roads, such as interstates 24, 55 and 57, and the blowing snow severely lowers visibility."

The snowstorm will shift Wednesday to the eastern Great Lakes and northeast, she said.

Southern Indiana is under a blizzard warning starting early Wednesday morning, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Crystal Pettet. Indianapolis could see its biggest snowfall in four years, with a possibility of 10-12 inches of snow.

"Conditions should be pretty bad in time for rush hour," said Pettet.

A 25-year-old Texas man was killed Tuesday when a tree fell across a road in Harris County, in the Houston metropolitan area, according to Thomas Gilliland of the county's sheriff's office.

A tornado destroyed a building 13 miles southeast of Crockett, Texas, and a bank lost a section of its roof, according to Accuweather.com.

Freezing drizzle overnight led to 10 separate collisions on Interstate 40 at Oklahoma City just before 3 a.m., said Trooper Betsy Randolph, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The 21-vehicle pile-up included three tractor-trailers and shut down the westbound lanes for about five hours, she said. Twelve people were taken to hospitals, and troopers are checking on the severity of their injuries.

In a rare taste of Christmas snow, Oklahoma City was forecast to get 3 to 6 inches of the white stuff on Tuesday. The city's biggest Christmas snowfall was 6.5 inches in 1914, and measurable amounts have been recorded only a handful of times on the date.

The FlightAware website, which tracks flight delays, reported departure delays of 40 minutes from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport at 5 p.m. local time and 32 minutes from Chicago/O'Hare International Airport.

San Francisco International Airport had delays for inbound flights of over an hour due to low clouds.

Ahead of the storm's path, parts of eastern West Virginia are under a winter storm warning. Ice accumulations of up to half an inch are expected in higher elevations, the National Weather Service said.

How to Buy Foreclosures ? Real Estate ? Property Investment | Raw ...

betterluck.jpg

When you are looking for a safe, clear investment, that will give you a good return in the next five to ten years, then the best place to look for that investment is in real estate, and especially in foreclosures. This type of real estate offers several benefits. The most drawing of the advantages in investing is foreclosure is the ability to get property at up to a 50% discount, and purchase it with a low interest mortgage. Foreclosures are the easiest way to get an investment that will quickly appreciate, but you have to know what you are looking for and wher to find those foreclosures. This means you have to do diligent research. The safest ways to buy foreclosures

Slow moving economies create a perfect environment for the small investor to buy a foreclosure property to either reside in, rent or to resell. This means all types of properties go into foreclosure, and this includes upscale homes, and not only homes in poverty ridden areas. Realistically speaking, foreclosures can be found at discounts of 30 to 40%. But to get the best foreclosure deals, an investor needs to learn about the foreclosure process, and spend a few hours a week consulting, reading up on, and investigating foreclosures in your area.

Foreclosure happens when an owner falls behind in his payments, and because of this he is usually having financial difficulty and has probably been having difficulty for some time, so the home may also be in disrepair. These can be simple maintenance issues like missing light bulbs, paint needs, or can be something major. All of these aspects also need to be considered when you purchase foreclosure property.

How do real estate investors find foreclosure property to invest in? Well, there are actually two ways to get foreclosure listings. You can opt to find free foreclosures, and to do this you go to the county public records office and find out which properties are in foreclosure. The records office is helpful, but it will still take you some time to get the information. You will have to sort through the files and wait your turn. You can also search through the local newspapers because foreclosures must go in the notification section prior to being foreclosed on.

Although the above method is a viable way to find foreclosures it is not very practical, as it takes up a lot of time, so a better method is by purchasing one or more foreclosure listings in your area. You can find these online. Then you need to locate the ones in nice areas and see if they are worth investing in. When investing such a large amount of money you always want to protect that investment as much as possible so you really need to investigate the listings you may consider purchasing, and you also need to do a full inspection.
