There is an urgent need for new drugs to treat Rett syndrome, a rare and severe neurological disease mainly affecting girls. A bottleneck in drug development for this syndrome is a lack of clarity at the level of preclinical research. Key researchers in this field now tackle this issue, proposing standards and guidelines for Rett syndrome research, in an Open Access review article published on Oct. 31, 2012 in Disease Models & Mechanisms (DMM) at http://dmm.biologists.org/. This "state of the science" assessment serves as a comprehensive resource of all findings and citations related to Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is a rare neurological disease that affects girls almost exclusively. Affected children appear to grow and develop normally for the first 6-12 months of life, but then begin to show symptoms including slow development, problems crawling or walking, and diminished eye contact. As the syndrome progresses, affected children show a regression of many skills, with loss of purposeful hand use, speech and basic motor function. Severe cases can experience problems with heart, respiratory and gastrointestinal function. Rett syndrome is extremely difficult on affected girls and their families. Although the disease-causing gene (called MECP2) has been identified, there is no cure, and only limited symptomatic treatments are available. A key to developing new treatments for this devastating disorder is to improve systems and standards at the preclinical research level.

The new review article reports on outcomes from a workshop held in September of 2011 focused on the state of the art in animal studies of Rett syndrome. The workshop was convened by important funders of Rett syndrome research, including the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the International Rett Syndrome Foundation (IRSF) and the Rett Syndrome Research Trust (RSRT). Workshop participants included key members of the Rett syndrome research community, including basic scientists, clinicians, and representatives from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the pharmaceutical industry and private foundations. Several workshop participants contributed to the article, and the corresponding authors are Dr. David Katz (Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine), Dr. Laura Mamounas (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) and Dr. Huda Zoghbi (Baylor College of Medicine).

The main aim of the workshop was to identify crucial knowledge gaps in Rett syndrome research at the preclinical level, and to suggest scientific priorities and best practices for the use of animal models in preclinical evaluation of potential new therapeutics. As explained in the new review article, the combination of an urgent need for effective treatments for Rett syndrome, coupled with the availability of good mouse models, is a driving force for studies that can identify and test new drugs. The outcome of the workshop included a set of recommended guidelines for animal studies of Rett syndrome, to ensure that decisions to initiate costly clinical trials will be founded on reliable data that is produced using standardized study design and transparent reporting. Ultimately, the increased level of rigor in animal studies should shorten the time to effective treatments.

Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel's Wedding Photo: First Look!

Posted Wednesday October 24, 2012 8:13 AM GMT

Showing their enthusiasm for their recent nuptials, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are ecstatic on the cover of People magazine.

The ?Cry Me A River? crooner jumped for joy while his beautiful blushing bride smiled from ear to ear in her gorgeous pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown.

In their interview, Jessica and Justin both gushed over how amazing their wedding turned out- ?It was a really special evening,? said Timberlake, while Ms. Biel added, ?It was a total fantasy experience.?

Justin also sang to his bride as she walked down the aisle- ?It was an original piece I wrote specifically for the evening and for her.?

And given the southern Italy locale of the event, Timberlake knew he had to make everything over-the-top even for his 100 guests. "It was a lot to ask of them to travel, so we figured we'd give our guests a good party!"

84 million stars and counting

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

Using a whopping nine-gigapixel image from the VISTA infrared survey telescope at ESO's Paranal Observatory, an international team of astronomers has created a catalogue of more than 84 million stars in the central parts of the Milky Way. This gigantic dataset contains more than ten times more stars than previous studies and is a major step forward for the understanding of our home galaxy. The image gives viewers an incredible, zoomable view of the central part of our galaxy. It is so large that, if printed with the resolution of a typical book, it would be 9 metres long and 7 metres tall.

"By observing in detail the myriads of stars surrounding the centre of the Milky Way we can learn a lot more about the formation and evolution of not only our galaxy, but also spiral galaxies in general," explains Roberto Saito (Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Universidad de Valparaiso and The Milky Way Millennium Nucleus, Chile), lead author of the study.

Most spiral galaxies, including our home galaxy the Milky Way, have a large concentration of ancient stars surrounding the centre that astronomers call the bulge. Understanding the formation and evolution of the Milky Way's bulge is vital for understanding the galaxy is a whole. However, obtaining detailed observations of this region is not an easy task.

"Observations of the bulge of the Milky Way are very hard because it is obscured by dust," says Dante Minniti (Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Chile), co-author of the study. "To peer into the heart of the galaxy, we need to observe in infrared light, which is less affected by the dust."

The large mirror, wide field of view and very sensitive infrared detectors of ESO's 4.1-metre Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) make it by far the best tool for this job. The team of astronomers is using data from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea programme (VVV), one of six public surveys carried out with VISTA. The data have been used to create a monumental 108 200 by 81 500 pixel colour image containing nearly nine billion pixels. This is one of the biggest astronomical images ever produced. The team has now used these data to compile the largest catalogue of the central concentration of stars in the Milky Way ever created.

To help analyse this huge catalogue the brightness of each star is plotted against its colour for about 84 million stars to create a colour-magnitude diagram. This plot contains more than ten times more stars than any previous study and it is the first time that this has been done for the entire bulge. Colour-magnitude diagrams are very valuable tools that are often used by astronomers to study the different physical properties of stars such as their temperatures, masses and ages.

"Each star occupies a particular spot in this diagram at any moment during its lifetime. Where it falls depends on how bright it is and how hot it is. Since the new data gives us a snapshot of all the stars in one go, we can now make a census of all the stars in this part of the Milky Way," explains Dante Minniti.

The new colour-magnitude diagram of the bulge contains a treasure trove of information about the structure and content of the Milky Way. One interesting result revealed in the new data is the large number of faint red dwarf stars. These are prime candidates around which to search for small exoplanets using the transit method.

"One of the other great things about the VVV survey is that it's one of the ESO VISTA public surveys. This means that we're making all the data publicly available through the ESO data archive, so we expect many other exciting results to come out of this great resource," concludes Roberto Saito.

High-pressure science gets super-sized

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? The study of materials at extreme conditions took a giant leap forward with the discovery of a way to generate super high pressures without using shock waves whose accompanying heat turns solids to liquid.

This discovery will allow scientists for the first time to reach static pressure levels exceeding four million atmospheres, a high-pressure environment where new unique compounds could be formed, materials change their chemical and physical properties and metals become insulators. An international team of scientists using a new high-pressure anvil design and technique in conjunction with high-energy X-rays was able to create 640 gigapascals, or GPas, of pressure. This is 50 percent more pressure than previously demonstrated and 150 percent more pressure than accessible by typical high-pressure experiments.

Pressures at this level have vast ramifications for earth science, cosmology, chemistry, shock physics and material science. Static pressure of 640 GPa is six million times the pressure of the air at Earth's surface and more than one and a half times the pressure at the center of Earth. Research at these pressures could lead to new revelations about how Earth evolved and how iron, the most abundant material inside Earth's core, functions at extremes.

This new super-high-pressure capability was developed by scientists from the University of Bayreuth in Germany, the University of Chicago and the University of Antwerp in Belgium. The physical properties of tiny materials (less than one micron thick) were investigated in situ at ultra-high pressures with high-resolution micro X-ray diffraction techniques at the GeoSoilEnviro Consortium for Advanced Radiation Sources, or GSECARS, a beamline operated by the University of Chicago at the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. Details appear October 23 in the journal Nature Communications.

"The ability to do static experiments at this pressure range has only been theorized about," said Vitali Prakapenka, an author on the paper and scientist at the Center for Advanced Radiation Sources at the University of Chicago. "We aren't stopping here. We expect to increase the accessible pressure range close to one terapascal, or 10 megabars, to probe materials at conditions corresponding to the core of gas giant planets, such as Uranus and Neptune, which have pressures of about seven megabars."

Previous studies have been limited because the only way to reach such high pressures was to use dynamic compression (shockwaves), which also generate high temperatures and only nanoseconds of observation time. The discovery of a way to apply static pressures allows experimental studies of physical and chemical properties of materials in situ at high pressures with a number of various techniques to test long-held theories, including metallization of hydrogen.

"This new technique could revolutionize the study of high-pressure science," said Leonid Dubrovinsky, one of the paper's authors and a scientist at the University of Bayreuth.

Since the late 1950s, scientists have been using diamond anvil cells to generate extreme pressures to test the durability of materials, to create new properties of materials, such as superconductivity, and to replicate high-pressure conditions of planetary interiors. Yet, until now, scientists have struggled to reach pressures of Earth's inner core, which is 320 to 360 GPa. Only a handful of experiments have been reported at these pressures, and the maximum achieved pressure had been about 420 GPa.

Scientists were able to triple the normal experiment pressure level by adding a second set of micro-anvils (10-20 microns in diameter) between two gem-quality single-crystal diamond anvils of about one-quarter of a carat each. This secondary anvil is made of superhard nanocrystalline diamond semi-balls fabricated from glassy carbon using newly developed technique in a large volume press at high pressure and temperature.

"The nanocrystalline diamond balls have very high yield strength and are less compressible and less brittle than single-crystal diamonds," said Natalia Dubrovinskaia, one of the paper's authors and a scientist at the University of Bayreuth. "That allows us to drastically extend the achievable pressure range using micro-balls as second stage anvils."

The GSECARS beamline is available for use through the general user proposal process at the APS.

Sirius XM CEO Mel Karmazin to step down

(Reuters) - Sirius XM Radio Inc Chief Executive Mel Karmazin will step down in February, a move that comes at a time when media mogul John Malone's Liberty Media Corp is trying to wrest full control of the satellite radio broadcaster.

Shares of the company were down 2 percent at $2.81 in trading after the bell on Tuesday.

Liberty, Sirius's largest shareholder with a stake of just under 50 percent, has been trying for months to wrest control of Sirius and has filed a petition with U.S. regulators to replace the company's board. Liberty has argued that Sirius should be more aggressive about pursuing better technology and expanding internationally.

Karmazin, who famously clashed with Sumner Redstone while at Viacom Inc, is known for his disdain of working for a controlling shareholder, and has indicated that Liberty likely wouldn't need him to stick around if it took control.

Karmazin, who has been at the helm of Sirius for eight years, will step down on February 1, 2013, after the expiry of his employment agreement.

"This is not overly surprising as Karmazin's public musings about the possibility of leaving as Liberty takes over have left most institutional investors we speak to expecting a departure," Lazard Capital Markets analyst Barton Crockett wrote in a note.

Under Karmazin, Sirius has grown its subscriber count to 23.4 million, and maintains an estimated 70 percent market share of pre-installed satellite radio in new cars sold in the United States.

"We will keep our foot on the gas and continue driving ahead to finish 2012 and lay the groundwork for 2013 and beyond," Karmazin wrote in an email to employees.

"I'm looking forward to seeing - and listening to - all that is ahead for SiriusXM in the years to come."

Sirius said its board formed a search committee to consider both internal and external candidates for its next CEO.

"While we understand, we regret Mel's decision to pursue other interests and are grateful for his willingness to oversee a smooth and orderly transition," Liberty CEO John Malone said in a statement.

Liberty acquired an initial stake of about 40 percent in Sirius in 2009 as part of a deal in which it loaned the satellite radio provider $530 million to help stave off bankruptcy.

In August, Liberty said it plans to spin off its premium pay-TV network Starz LLC into a separate public company in a deal seen as taking a step closer to taking control of Sirius XM.

Liberty Media said it was considering a tax-free spinoff of its 46 percent stake in the satellite radio provider.

The discussion around an imminent Liberty-Sirius deal boosted Sirius shares as they touched a year-high of $2.97 in mid-October.

Liberty shares were down 58 cents at $109.81 in extended trading on Tuesday.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Adolescents can be chronically sleep deprived because of their inability to fall asleep early in combination with fixed wakeup times on school days. According to the CDC, almost 70 percent of school children get insufficient sleep -- less than 8 hours on school nights. This type of restricted sleep schedule has been linked with depression, behavior problems, poor performance at school, drug use, and automobile accidents. A new study from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute shows that exposure to morning short-wavelength "blue" light has the potential to help sleep-deprived adolescents prepare for the challenges of the day and deal with stress, more so than dim light.

The study was a collaboration between Associate Professor and Director of the LRC Light and Health Program Mariana Figueiro and LRC Director and Professor Mark S. Rea. Results of the study were recently published in the open access International Journal of Endocrinology. ?

Levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal gland, follow a daily 24-hour rhythm. Cortisol concentrations are low throughout the day reaching a broad minimum in the evening before rising slowly again throughout the night. In addition to this gradual elevation of cortisol at night, cortisol levels rise sharply within the first 30 to 60 minutes after waking. This is known as the cortisol awakening response (CAR). In nocturnal animals, the cortisol spike occurs at night, at the start of activity. It appears to be associated with the time of transition from rest to activity, upon waking. A high CAR has been associated with better preparedness for stressful and challenging activities.

"The present results are the first to show that low levels of short-wavelength light enhance CAR in adolescents who were restricted from sleep," said Figueiro. "Morning light exposure may help to wake up the body when it is time to be active, thus preparing individuals for any environmental stress they might experience."

Short-wavelength light has been shown to maximally suppress production of nocturnal melatonin and phase shift the timing of the biological clock. The effect of short-wavelength light on other biomarkers has not been widely studied.

The study included three overnight sessions, at least one week apart. All participants wore a Dimesimeter on a wrist band to measure light exposure and to verify the regularity of their activity/rest periods during the three-week study. The Dimesimeter is a small calibrated light meter device developed by the LRC that continuously records circadian light and activity levels. During the study, adolescents aged 12 to 17 years went to sleep at 1:30 a.m. and woke up at 6:00 a.m., a 4.5-hour sleep opportunity. Each week, participants either experienced morning short-wavelength blue light (40 lux of 470-nanometer light) or remained in dim light.

"We found that exposure to short-wavelength blue light in the morning significantly enhances CAR in sleep deprived adolescents, more so than dim light," said Rea. "Morning exposure to short-wavelength light may be a simple, yet practical way to better prepare adolescents for the challenges of the day."

Google's big October 29th product launches apparently outed ...

A few days ago, Google sent out invitations?to a press event to be held on October 29th in New York City. We noted that this event was happening on the same day as Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 press events in San Francisco and other parts of the world.

Now TheNextWeb.com reports it has information on all of the new product reveals that Google will announce at this October 29th media junket, and quite frankly it sounds pretty impressive, if all of this is true. The story says the information comes from an internal video shown to Google employees.

It's not a surprise to learn that Google is said to be revealing a 32 GB version of its previously released Nexus 7 tablet, made by Asus, at this event. The tablet will be available in both WiFi only and a WiFi/3G version, according to the story. It adds that Google will also reveal a 10 inch tablet, made by Samsung, that has the code name "Manta" but might be called the Nexus 10 when it is actually released.

The Manta will reportedly have a screen resolution of 2560x1600 and 300 PPI, compared to the current iPad which has "just" 264 PPI. The story also reports that Google will reveal the LG Nexus 4 smartphone at the event, with a 4.7 inch 1280x768 display, a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm?Snapdragon processor, 2 GB of RAM and more.

Both the Manta tablet and the LG Nexus 4 will reportedly be running on Android 4.2, which among other new features will allow users to access Google Play downloaded content from a widget and a way for one tablet to be shared by several people who can then access their own emails and apps.

Paranormal Activity 5 Confirmed

paranormal-activity-slice

The fourth installment in the Paranormal Activity franchise literally opened in theaters three days ago, but Paramount has already given a greenlight and a Halloween 2013 release date for Paranormal Activity 5.? Though the decision isn?t exactly a shock, many expected Paramount to take a bit more time to figure out how to move forward with the series in the wake of Paranormal Activity 4?s relatively disappointing box office numbers.? The found footage horror pic scored only $30 million domestically this weekend, falling short of the opening weekend takes of PA 2 and PA 3.? Hit the jump for more.

paranormal-activity-4-kathryn-newtonParanormal Activity 4?s negative reviews also didn?t help matters, but it?s important to note that found footage series does incredibly well overseas. PA 4 has already earned $25.6 million in 33 overseas territories, and if the last installment?s numbers abroad are any indication ($101 million in foreign box office for PA 3), then PA 4 is destined to make a decent amount of money worldwide. ?Moreover, on a budget of $5 million,?the fourth installment should turn quite the profit.

The Paranormal Activity?franchise is so popular in Latino territories that Paramount put in motion a Latino-centric spinoff of the series back in April.? Christopher Landon is onboard to write and direct, and Deadline?s report regarding Paranormal Activity 5 notes that the studio has already set a tentative Spring 2013 release date for the spinoff.? Though the film won?t feature any of the main characters from the Paranormal Activity franchise, it is said to focus on the same demon-like thingy that enjoys lurking in shadows and throwing people across rooms.

In keeping with the production process of the previous sequels, no writer, director, or cast is set for Paranormal Activity 5 just yet. ?Series veterans?Oren Peli?(who directed the first film but hasn?t helmed anything since) and Jason Blum?will once again produce. ?The next installment in the main franchise will hit theaters next Halloween, while the Latino spinoff will tentatively open this coming spring.

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? The brain's key "breeder" cells, it turns out, do more than that. They secrete substances that boost the numbers and strength of critical brain-based immune cells believed to play a vital role in brain health. This finding adds a new dimension to our understanding of how resident stem cells and stem cell transplants may improve brain function.

Many researchers believe that these cells may be able to regenerate damaged brain tissue by integrating into circuits that have been eroded by neurodegenerative disease or destroyed by injury. But new findings by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine suggest that another process, which has not been fully appreciated, could be a part of the equation as well. The findings appear in a study that will be published online Oct. 21 in Nature Neuroscience.

"Transplanting neural stem cells into experimental animals' brains shows signs of being able to speed recovery from stroke and possibly neurodegenerative disease as well," said Tony Wyss-Coray, PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences in the medical school and senior research scientist at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. "Why this technique works is far from clear, though, because actually neural stem cells don't engraft well."

Neural stem cells can endure essentially unchanged for decades in two places in the mammalian brain, replicating just enough to meet the routine needs of those regions. In most parts of the brain, they aren't found at all.

While of critical importance to maintaining healthy brain function, true neural stem cells are rare. Far more common are their immediate progeny, which are called neural progenitor cells, or NPCs. These robust, rapidly dividing cells are poised to travel down a committed path of differentiation to yield new brain cells of several different types including neurons.

It's known that treating humans with radiation or drugs that prevent NPC replication causes memory deficits ("chemo brain") and, in children, IQ losses of up to 20 points. Conversely, studies are being initiated to see whether infusing neural stem cells into brains affected by Alzheimer's disease can enhance patients' memory function.

One category of brain cells, microglia, descends not from neural stem cells but from an immune lineage and retains several features of immune cells. "Microglia are the brain's own resident immune cells," Wyss-Coray said. Unlike most other mature brain cells, microglia can proliferate throughout adulthood, especially in response to brain injury. They can, moreover, migrate toward injury sites, secrete various "chemical signaling" substances, and gobble up bits of debris, microbial invaders or entire dead or dying neurons.

Microglia normally are distributed throughout the brain -- rather small, quiescent cells sprouting long, skinny projections that meekly but efficiently survey large areas that, taken together, cover the entire brain. But if this surveillance reveals signs of a disturbance, such as injury or infection, the microglia whirl into action. They begin proliferating and their puny bodies puff up, metamorphosing from mild-mannered Clark Kent-like reporters to buffed Supermen who fly to the scene of trouble, where they secrete substances that can throttle bad actors or call in reinforcements. Within these activated cells, internal garbage disposals called lysosomes form in large numbers and start whirring, ready to make mincemeat out of pathogens or cellular debris.

In addition to their part patrol-officer, part cleanup-crew status, microglia can also secrete substances that help neurons thrive. They also contribute to the ongoing pruning of unneeded connections between neurons that occurs throughout our lives.

But like immune cells elsewhere, said Wyss-Coray, microglia can be a force for evil if they engage in too much or inappropriate activity. They might, for instance, start to remove healthy cells (as occurs in Parkinson's) or stop cleaning up garbage strewn about the brain (for example, Alzheimer's plaque).

In a series of experiments, Wyss-Coray and his colleagues have shown that NPCs secrete substances that activate microglia. First, the researchers observed that microglia were uncharacteristically abundant and activated in the two regions in the mammalian brain where NPCs reside and new neurons are formed. Wondering whether the NPCs might be causing this increased microglial activity, the investigators incubated mouse microglia in a culture medium in which NPCs had previously been steeped. Two days later, they saw that the microglia had multiplied more, expressed different amounts of various signal molecules and featured more lysosomes. "The microglia were ready for action," said Wyss-Coray.

So they injected NPCs into an area of mice's brains where these cells are normally not found. In the same area in the opposing brain hemisphere, they injected a control solution. Again they found significant differences in microglial proliferation and activity, and more microglia in the NPC-injected side had assumed a "Superman" as opposed to a "Clark Kent" body shape. When they repeated this experiment using only the NPCs' "discarded bath water" rather than NPCs themselves, they got similar results.

Clearly NPCs were secreting something, or some things, that were spurring microglia to action.

Using sophisticated lab techniques, the team monitored purified NPCs plus several other cell types found in the brain and assessed nearly 60 different substances known to have powerful cell-to-cell signaling properties. Several such substances, it turned out, were secreted in much larger amounts by NPCs than by the other cell types: most notably, vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF -- a well-known molecule produced by many cell types throughout the body. VEGF stimulates the formation of blood vessels and exerts a beneficial effect on neurons. Conversely, drugs that block VEGF (such as Avastin) are frequently used to combat cancer because tumors require an immense blood supply in order to grow quickly.

VEGF is also known to boost microglial proliferation. Because it is produced in such volumes by NPCs, Wyss-Coray's team wanted to see if VEGF alone could mimic any of the changes wrought by NPCs or their culture-medium-borne detritus. So they injected VEGF into mice's right brain hemisphere, and saline solution into the left -- again with the same outcomes. Taking the opposite tack, the team injected NPC-saturated medium devoid of the cells, as they had done earlier. But this time they first used various laboratory techniques to deplete the fluid of the VEGF secreted by its former inhabitants. Doing this almost completely reversed its microglia-activating effects.

"All of this strongly suggests that VEGF produced by NPCs is playing a strong role in influencing microglial behavior," said Wyss-Coray. "This is important, because in all neurodegenerative diseases we know of we see microglia out of control." The new finding may open the door to reprogramming misbehaving microglia to play better with other cells.

Important Aspects of an Real Estate Agent | Destination Raleigh

Posted on Sunday, October 21st, 2012

Agents don?t also have a great name amongst home sellers and buyers, they are generally known for simply saying whatever it take in order to market a home. Whether or not we like this or not we all need a real estate agent, guide you within areas where you?ll struggle alone Carlsbad real estate . They setup meetings, discover houses befitting you, negotiate prices and deal with the particular legal parts. So the most sensible thing you can do is find the best estate realtor for you, even though, this is not so easy ? there are hundreds of real estate agents and companies. In no way choose a representative without shopping around and undertaking full research. What are the very best things to consider?

1. A chance to answer questions

Simply how much do they understand about the industry, nevertheless more specifically regarding the area you want to invest in. They must be able to let you know how many homes have been bought from the area and what the regular price is. Look at how the distinct realtors answer your questions, can they get inflammed or make an effort to oversell? You can easily explain to when a person is saying specifics or creating something up to get you aboard.

2. Could they be trustworthy

This is difficult to evaluate on your very first time meeting the particular realtor, nevertheless perhaps you have observed good things concerning this agent coming from someone who has dealt with them prior to. From the initial meeting, however, you should be capable to tell no matter whether you want to handle this person for the next few months and did you obtain a feeling that they are looking out for your best interests. Did they will talk about payment on the initial day? This should be a concern, as they are making it about the subject Ventura real estate .

Israel's PM: No limits on Jerusalem construction

(AP) ? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is vowing to continue building in east Jerusalem, over the objection of Palestinians who claim the territory as capital of their hoped-for state.

Netanyahu spoke Sunday after the European Union's foreign policy chief criticized plans to build 800 new apartments and a military college on contested land.

He told his Cabinet on Sunday, "We are not imposing any restrictions on construction in Jerusalem. It is our capital."

The fate of Jerusalem lies at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Palestinians refuse to negotiate while Israel continues to build settlements in east Jerusalem and the West Bank. Israel captured both areas in the 1967 Mideast war.

Netanyahu has rejected the notion of partitioning the city.

Bring the noise! Sony confirms HD Voice support for Xperia T

DNP Sony confirms HD Voice support for the Xperia T

In the fast moving world of smartphones, giant HD displays just aren't enough anymore. The new hot commodity in the land of mobile is "HD Voice." Sure, the technology isn't exactly brand new, but using it over post-3G high speed networks is. The selling point here is high quality noise cancellation, which allows a phone's user to be heard clearly in the noisiest of environments. The latest device to hop on the bandwagon is Sony's Xperia T. When describing this feature, the herculean consumer electronics maker got downright emotional saying, "you feel closer to the person you are talking to." While we're not too sure about that, HD Voice did impress during our ears-on session. The major caveat here is that this feature requires that both parties have HD Voice capable handsets. So, until this concept becomes more mainstream, Xperia T owners' phone calls are likely to be close, but no cigar.

Cassette tapes are the future of big data storage

THE cassette tape is about to make a comeback, in a big way. From the updates posted by Facebook's 1 billion users to the medical images shared by healthcare organisations worldwide and the rise of high-definition video streaming, the need for something to store huge tranches of data is greater than ever. And while hard drives have traditionally been the workhorse of large storage operations, a new wave of ultra-dense tape drives that pack in information at much higher densities, while using less energy, is set to replace them.

Researchers at Fuji Film in Japan and IBM in Zurich, Switzerland, have already built prototypes that can store 35 terabytes of data - or about 35 million books' worth of information - on a cartridge that measures just 10 centimetres by 10 cm by 2 cm. This is achieved using magnetic tape coated in particles of barium ferrite.

But the real debut for this technology is likely to be the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the world's largest radio telescope, whose thousands of antennas will be strewn across the southern hemisphere (New Scientist, 2 June, p 4). Once it's up and running in 2024, the SKA is expected to pump out 1 petabyte (1 million gigabytes) of compressed data per day.

Current projections by the trade body Information Storage Industry Consortium show that although hard drives will be able to store 3 terabytes a piece in a decade's time, that still amounts to at least 120,000 drives a year.

That annual archive growth would swamp an experiment that is expected to last decades, says Evangelos Eleftheriou of IBM, who is part of a team working to build tapes for the SKA. By the time the telescope comes online, he and colleagues expect to be able to store 100 terabytes on a cartridge of a similar size to their prototype, by shrinking the width of the recording tracks and using more accurate systems for positioning the read-write heads used to access them.

Using tapes should cut down drastically on energy use, too. Data centres based on disc drive arrays use over 200 times more power than would a tape library of similar size, according to a 2010 study by The Clipper Group, a technology consultancy based in Rye, New Hampshire. That's because disc drives in large arrays tend to remain powered-up, so their platters spin continuously, in case data is required, says Jon Hiles of Spectra Logic, a digital archiving firm in Boulder, Colorado. But tape drives only use power when they are being read or recorded on, he says.

The downside of tapes is that they are slower to access than hard discs because they have to be fetched by a robotic mechanism, inserted in a reader and spooled to the right point. But the Linear Tape File System, which is being developed, expedites this process to make it comparable to disc drives, Eleftheriou says.

As storage needs skyrocket, hard drives won't be able to keep up and keep power down, Eleftheriou says. Density improvements in hard drives are facing physical limits that mean they can only add more power-munching platters. "It's time to take advantage of the low power and low cost of tape," he says.

Summer swimming on the Copper Coast 4 ? And we're done ...

I have no plan to swim into every cave on the Copper Coast, and no plan to subject you all to every one. But we have almost covered all the most interesting ones that I?ve swam to date: Some are obviously above high water mark and inaccessible, and some are too small, and there are sooo many.?Some always seem to catching swell and/or aren?t safe when I visit them, especially on the lengths of coast where I swim less. But I do swim into anything big or interesting looking. And when I think I?ve seen them all, I discover something new. In fact, after I wrote this (a couple of months before it was posted), I swam into another big cave, and through another large arch.

Sheep Island (left), Eagle Rock (centre), Island of the Frenchmen (right)

Sheep Island in Kilfarassey separates Gararrus and Kilfarassey Bays. In both cases the promontory/island is at the more inaccessible far end away from the small car parks, east from Kilfarassey, west from Gararrus.

Island of the Frenchmen, inside Sheep island

Swimming from Kilfarassey with a trip out to and around Burke?s Island first (because that?s what I normally do) can mean a 40 minute swim to get to Sheep island. Or sometimes, if you are going around high tide to get access to some of the arches, you are swimming east against a tidal current and it can take 50 minutes, (as it did recently), passing some of Mick O?Meara?s?seapaddling.com?kayak day-trippers. Halfway across Kilfarassey Bay.

Kayaker (centre) clambering around on Burkes?s reefs

There they are, clambering around the rocks out on Burke?s Island with their kayaks pulled up, feeling like adventurers, when next thing some lunatic in an orange cap swims past. ?I?ve seen the What-The-Hell look on their faces. Mick recently set a new Irish Sea kayak record by the way. (Ironically, we?ve yet to meet, though we must pass each other regularly in the water, and my car is often parked beside his van at Kilfarassey). There?s a tunnel in the promontory inside Sheep island that I?d looked at last year, that had grown longer and narrowed in my imagination, you can see it in both pictures above on the right-hand side. (Notice the reefs around the exit). When I finally swam back to it after circling Sheep Island, swimming from the west outside and around to the east, I realised it was actually only about 30 metres long and quite wide, two to three metres. But I swam through it anyway. :-) Swimming though the tunnel . The promontory itself is also separated from the cliff and is like a giant Swiss cheese with a few large tunnels though it, most above high tide, though one or two are accessible to swimmer or kayak on a high spring tide. Those I swam last year, and are amongst the least interesting, partly because they are so large much of the sense of adventure is lost. When I?d swum around Sheep island, I was swimming in among the rocks, looking for channels when I caught a glimpse of blue sky ? through the rocks. I swam closed and discovered another tunnel, through Sheep Island itself. Unlike the other tunnel, this was narrow and crooked. Attempting the Sheep Island ?narrowest arch? from the east video. I made an ?exploratory probe? into it, and discovered the other end was narrower, very narrow. It wasn?t safe so I exited. Back through the channel between the island and to the west side of the island for a look from there. Everything happens slowly when you are swimming. On that side I discovered the tunnel was partially hidden behind a low reef. ?There were also reefs almost touching the surface, which by now was only about an hour past high tide. I made two attempts to get in. There was a barnacle-covered rock just under the surface. Surges of water seemed amplified coming over the outside reefs, the walls were right beside me.

The narrowest arch

?

Each time I abandoned and went back. On the third attempt I stood on the sub-surface rock, the gap only a metre away,, and, what added to the difficulty was that it was slightly less than shoulder width and with a slight bend. Back I went again, before I decided this might be my last (or only) chance this year. I didn?t want to wait till next year. I was willing to risk some skin. I was going through. It was too narrow to film, the thing was to be decisive and move quickly. I managed to make it around the subsurface rock in a lull. Then I had to duck under water surface to avoid?the dropping drop of the side. It was a three metres or so of difficulty before I made it into the wider stretch. I was through, the Sheep Island tunnel, by far the most difficult, was done on the fifth attempt (from both sides). ? Oh, and also on this little expedition I swam into a channel where jellyfish polyps were releasing, small jellies, some only 1 cm in diameter. ? ? Attempting the tunnel from the west. I had quite a number of cuts and grazes, the worst on my hand and my back. Totally worth it.

When I got back the beach after another 30 minutes, about two and a half hours after I left, the normally deserted Kilfarassey beach was inundated with people.

It?s a crowd!

It was still bright and sunny, unusual this summer, so a good day for cliff walking.

Looking carefully, a couple of kayakers could still be seen paddling through the reefs out at Burke?s.

Kayakers on Burkes reefs, look carefully

What produces all these great caves and arches is the interaction of the punishing Atlantic storms with the Old Red Sandstone of this coast.

One of the last stretches of stone wall above Kilfarassey

In the couple of years since I?ve begun haunting Kilfarassey, the cliff edge has retreated one to two metres in a couple of places, with only short sections left of the old stone cliff top wall.

I took this image on the left last year, but that stretch of wall is now sadly gone. New electric fence installed within the last year is only a metre from the cliff edge and will surely need to be moved again within another two years. Oh, why are there electric fence by a cliff you ask? Cows. We have them. Lots of them.

Almost all the early summer thrift?were faded, only a few stalwarts left on sentry duty.

Last Thrift

I?ve been a bit heavy-handed with the colour saturation on my photos lately, a tendency I must try to rein in. But when the skies are grey so much of the time?

The wall fragment above in context. Seen from the side it?s even more exposed.

Just one thrift, with the sea as backdrop, my current desktop (at a larger resolution). It?s a long way to next summer, a long way to 15 or 16 degree water, a long way to spending as much time in water as I want and not thinking about it.
